Congratulations to Anthony “Tony” Alvarez of the LMVSC Patriots 2007 Boys Red, our LMVSC Travel Player of the Week.

Tony, playing with Coach Ricardo Luis and the 2007 Boys Red in a CCL Premiership league matchup against DC Stoddert, during a tough nil-nil encounter deep into the second half, came onto the field to provide exactly what his team needed by putting the opposition under relentless pressure.

On a quick transition play, Tony was fed a thru-pass from a teammate, and he beat the defender to the ball, got his shot off while under pressure.  The DC Stoddert goalkeeper made a great save but gave up the rebound.  Always relentless, Tony never gave up on the play, recovered the rebound, skillfully beat the defender 1v1, and struck the ball expertly past the keeper and under the crossbar.  Everyone on the team was elated, not only because it was Tony’s first goal, his persistence proved to be the play that decided the outcome of the match.

According to Coach Ricardo, ”One thing that is always there for Tony in each game is this high energy, ability to quickly close down the opposition defense, quick transition into attack, and his never-give-up attitude. And this past weekend was no different.  I am so proud and happy for him.”

Up until this year, Tony has been playing mostly as a goalie, but this year he decided to make the switch to the field full-time.  Tony has been working very hard to improve his skill-set on the field since the start of the season as a Center Forward (#9) and as right Outside Back (#2).

Tony has a strong right footed shot and had come very close to scoring many times but had come short either due to a post, a few inches, or a great keeper save.

Keep working hard Tony!
